Magnetic field sustained by the elastic force in neutron star crusts

چکیده
We investigate the magneto--elastic equilibrium of a neutron star crust and magnetic energy stored by elastic force. The solenoidal motion driven Lorentz force can be controlled force, so that conditions for field strength geometry are less restrictive. For models, minor part is balanced weak because irrotational dominant gravity pressure forces. Therefore, strong may confined in interior, regardless poloidal or toroidal components. numerically calculated axially symmetric models with maximum shear--strain, found $> 10^{46}$ erg crust, even normal surface dipole-field-strength ($<10^{13}$ G). much exceeds ($ 10^{44} -10^{45}$ erg). shear--stress spatial distribution revealed structure likely to break down near surface. In particular, critical position highly localized at depth than 100 m from

Magnetic field dissipation in neutron star crusts: from magnetars to isolated neutron stars
Context. We study the non–linear evolution of magnetic fields in neutron star crusts with special attention to the influence of the Hall drift. Aims. Our goal is to understand the conditions for fast dissipation due to the Hall term in the induction equation. We study the interplay of Ohmic dissipation and Hall drift in order to find a timescale for the overall crustal field decay. Methods. We ...
متن کاملElectron conduction along quantizing magnetic fields in neutron star crusts
We derive practical expressions for a rapid and accurate evaluation of electric and thermal conductivities and thermopower of degenerate relativistic electrons along quantizing magnetic fields in outer neutron star crusts. We consider the electron Coulomb scattering on ions in liquid matter, as well as on high-temperature phonons or charged impurities in solid matter. We propose also a reasonab...
متن کاملNeutron-phonon Interaction in Neutron Star Crusts
The phonon spectrum of Coulomb lattice in neutron star crusts above the neutron drip density is affected by the interaction with the ambient neutron Fermi-liquid. For the values of the neutron-phonon coupling constant in the range 0.1 ≤ λ ≤ 1 an appreciable renormalization of the phonon spectrum occurs which can lead to a lattice instability manifested in an exponential growth of the density fl...
متن کاملMagnetic Field Evolution in Neutron Star Crusts Due to the Hall Effect and Ohmic Decay
We present calculations of magnetic field evolution by the Hall effect and Ohmic decay in the crust of neutron stars (NSs). In accreting NSs, Ohmic decay is always the dominant effect due to the large resistivity. In isolated NSs with relatively pure crusts, the Hall effect dominates Ohmic decay after a time tswitch ≃ 104 yr B−3 12, where B12 is the magnetic field strength in units of 1012 G. W...
متن کاملPhysics of Neutron Star Crusts
The physics of neutron star crusts is vast, involving many different research fields, from nuclear and condensed matter physics to general relativity. This review summarizes the progress, which has been achieved over the last few years, in modeling neutron star crusts, both at the microscopic and macroscopic levels. The confrontation of these theoretical models with observations is also briefly...
